GP Drum & Bass Brownswood Basement

You may love it or you may be indifferent but there's no doubting that drum 'n bass is still going strong around the world. Gilles Peterson dropped a brownswood basement special (all vinyl and all original pressings) a few weeks back charting his favorite DnB tracks since the 90s. Have a listen right here.

playjazzloud jazz sessions vol. 44

a.k.a. playjazzloud basement sessions #5.

Yes yes it's a new week and if you've been able to tear yourselves away from the soccer/football, which I barely did to drop this mix, there has been lots to watch with great games coming out of South Africa. Props to all the footballers working hard for their countries. Started out this week with a long time classic from Handsome Boy Modeling School w/Roisin Murphy from Moloko, then hitting some house sounds from Flying Lotus' new record and an oldie but goodie from Clyde. I had to drop a double bill from Gil Scott-Heron before heading to a latin feel with Ocho and a long time favorite, Seu Jorge. Finishing up with something that maybe I wouldn't normally play but it's been getting a lot of airplay on the radio here and it's gotten under my skin, it's not originally a stand out track for me from the new Nas & Damian Marley album but with everything going on in South Africa right now this has the perfect vibe. Enjoy, listen below or download from here and be sure to check out our friends at basement sessions.

1. Handsome Boy Modeling School Feat. Roisin & J-Live - The Truth
2. Benny Sings - Coconut
3. Unlimited Touch - I hear music in the streets
4. Flying Lotus - Do The Astral Planet
5. Clyde - Roll Of The Beast
6. Pascal Rioux - Don't Outstay (Patchworks Deep Mix)
7. Bernard Wright - Spinnin'
8. Gil Scott-Heron - Home is ever the hatred is
9. Gil Scott-Heron - A legend in his own mind

11. Seu Jorge - Tive Razão (I Was Right)
12. Osmar Milito - Quem Mandou
13. D'Angelo - Brown Sugar
14. Erykah Badu - Gone Baby, Don't Be Long
15. Damian Marley & Nas - Africa Must Wake Up

runtime an hour and ten minutes

playjazzloud sessions Vol. 43

Hope you enjoy this week's mix. I've dug up some good jazz numbers from Wayne Shorter, Matthew Halsall, and dipping into some Cuban sounds via Buena Vista Social Club still sounding fresh all these years. A nice track off of K'naan's album and then something I was sent last week from EyeZon a great MC dropping something over a Femi Kuti track, look out for more music from this man. There's a new project from Elan Mehler called Half Seas Over and it's beautiful jazz tinged song writing. I love Pomplamoose and you should check any of the video songs on youtube. Lastly been meaning to drop this great artist from Akwaaba Music, Ahmed Fofana, good music from Mali, get into it. Listen below or download from here. Till next week.

1. Buena Vista Social Club - Pueblo Nuevo
2. Christian Scott - The Eraser
3. Bonobo - All In Forms
4. K'naan - America (ft. Mos Def & Chali 2NA)
5. Femi Kuti + EyeZon South AfriCali.MC - SORRY SORRY
6. Ahmed Fofana - Baro
7. Wayne Shorter - Dance Cadaverous
8. Elizabeth Shepherd - Numbers
9. Grace Jones - Williams' Blood (Yam Who Cosmic Jam)
10. Pomplamoose - Another Day

Gilles Peterson Havana Cultura Mix

Very cool remix LP dropping from Brownswood Recordings soon it seems and in advance here is a great mix selection from GP. Havana Cultura was definitely one of the records of 2009 and it looks like from this the remix LP is going to be big for 2010. Don't sleep.

playjazzloud sessions Vol. 42

I got some poetry inspired music this week for you one from Christopher D. Sims that I came across on MixCloud via a Twitter friend (just shows you music can come from anywhere these days) and then there's this Sage Francis tune that local radio KCRW has been playing constantly, each of these tracks coming from a different place but exciting stuff. Mos Dub is another thing I came across via Twitter following Jeremy Sole, which is one of a few hip hop tracks I wanted to drop is last week's hip hop mix but ran outta time, others include UK hip hop from Chima Anya and new Damian Marley & Nas joint that is bad. I came across this new (well it's been around for a few years) side project from Jose Gonzalez, Junip, worth checking the new album dropping later this summer. Have a great week and it's less than 2 weeks till WC 2010! Enjoy. Listen below, or download from here (right click and select download file).

Christopher D. Sims - Poetry Revolution
Chima Anya - Spell it out
Kaarkasi - Armastus ja Vari
Bei Bei & Shawn Lee - Willingness ft. Georgia Anne Muldrow
Sérgio Mendes Trio - So Danao Samba

Sage Francis - The best of times
Junip - Rope and summit
Mos Dub - Kampala Truth Work
