playjazzloud sessions vol. 72 [Frederic Soulable guest mix]

Greatings from Los Angeles. This week's show I'm really lucky to have a guest mix from Frederic Soulable who brings a tasty selection of soul, funk and downtempo goodness to your ears. But first up I'm dropping a few new tracks from Ghostpoet & Jame Blake who combined will have two of the top ten albums of 2011 for sure. Then it's some oldies with Koop (sounding fresh right next to James Blake), Henry Mancini, Jamiroquai and Courtney Pine with the classic "I've known rivers." playjazzloud sessions vol 71

Friday saw the release of the new record from Radiohead and I had to try really hard to limit myself to only playing 3 of the 8 tracks from what is a cracking album. Taking off from where they left off in 2007's "In Rainbows" the new record may not break big new ground but there are signs that new sounds are creeping in and expect the next record to hit uncharted territories for sure. Aside from pouring praise on the new Radiohead record I have the usual jazz sounds curtousey of Finn Peters (who has a great new record), Sleepwalker, Donald Byrd, Nicola Conte and more. There's a slight latin vibe in the session as well with sounds from Jorge Ben, Meirelles, and Roberto Fonseca. There's (what I believe is) the debute full length from Bajka (you'll know her voice from work with Radio Citizen and Bonobo) and I have one track from that. playjazzloud sessions vol. 70 {the Valentine edition]

This is not exactly a Valentine's edition but I do have a few smooth as you like tunes to kick things off and we have a great new track from UniverSouLove & The Hedonist that has tons of Valentine vibes oozing out. So this week I have some soul to get things rolling with King Britt and Linda Crawford. Sandwiched in between is an unreleased track from Umod a.k.a. Domu, I'll be playing a lot more of this unreleased Domu stuff over the next few weeks. I'm going back to some serious Jazz-Funk roots with Snowblower and then something new to me, Dizzy Gillespie & Lalo Schifrin dropping some great stuff together, what a combo. playjazzloud sessions vol. 69 "John Barry" feature

Hello February and hello to some great music. Last Sunday saw the passing of the hugely influential John Barry and I have a small selection of music from some of his great film scores with an obvious nod to his James Bond soundtracks with "From Russia With Love" and "Goldfinger". There's music from "Midnight Cowboy," "Out of Africa" and one of my favorites, "The Ipcress Files." Aside from that we have the usual jazz from two great modern European Jazz labels, Ricky-Tick and Schema Records. There's also some other stuff including more new music from d'wala's Pinot Dark project and also from our resident poet, UniverSouLove with The Hedonist. Enjoy and catch you next week.
