World Cup Brazil Album-A-Day [Black Rio 2]

Day 17.
The action is back with round of 16 matches today.
Today's album is a compilation which I wasn't sure if I was going to do as you always feel it's kinda cheating but whatever! I really wanted to share Pete Dunaway's 1974 self titled album but it's not streaming anywhere so the next best thing is this fantastic compilation "Black Rio 2" that has the stand out track from Dunaway's record and a bunch more soulful, funky, Brazilian vibes. A great selection of tracks from the always on point Strut Recordings.

Enjoy.

World Cup Brazil Album-A-Day [Os Ipanemas]

Day 16.
It is the first day of no football at the world cup.
It is a strange day after 15 days of back to back action.
Relax and enjoy some music.
Os Ipanemas aka The Ipanemas are a collective of Brazilian musicians who dropped on album back in the 60s and went on to other things individually. Reunited by UK label Far Out Recordings in early 2000s they started laying down their special sound of African and Brazilian rhythms.
Enjoy.

WorldCup Brazil Album-A-Day 015 [Jorge Ben]

Day 15...almost missed today.
Congrats to USA, and Algeria (1st time in last 16).
Jorge Ben is a big figure in Brazil's musical history. A big influence.
His 1969 self titled album contains one of my fav tracks of his "Take it easy my brother charles" that was also sampled to perfection by Drumagik's "Easy Boom" that transformed it into a Brazilian style drum 'n bass monster.

I hope you enjoy this fantastic record that features a ton of great material from Jorge.

World Cup Brazil Album-A-Day 014 [Elis Regina]

Day 14! Boom!
Shocking scenes from Brazil yesterday. Ivory Coast going out on the final kick of the game and Uruguay...enough said.
I'm sticking with the female vocalist vibe from yesterday and Elis Regina and her 1972 album Elis is what I have in store for today. If you don't know her already you'll recognized her voice for sure.
Very much a national treasure who sadly passed away too young.

Enjoy.

World Cup Album-A-Day 013 [Flora Purim]

Day 13 is here and still a lot of football to be played.
Props to Mexico yesterday.
Today is all about Flora Purim. One of many talented voices of Brazilian music.
Married to another great Brazilian artist, Airto Moreira, she is a force of nature in jazz.
Her "Flora e MPM" is the first record she cut singing many Bossa standards.

Enjoy.

World Cup Album-A-Day 012 - Sergio Mendes

Day 12! Still going strong.
Wow what a day yesterday. 4 goals for Algeria. USA thirty seconds away from qualifying.
We are as they say at the business end of the group stages. Four more days till the final sixteen.
On to the music.
You know him already it's not anything new but it's good.
Sergio Mendes has been bringing bossa to the world for many years, he has taken Brazilian songs and made them classics and he has taken western classics from The Beatles, Stevie Wonder and Dusty Springfield etc and flip them on their heads. Here's a cool one from Sergio  "The Swinger from Rio".

World Cup Album-A-Day 011 - Banda Black Rio

Day 11 is here!
Big big game for the US team. Good Luck.
So we shall get funky Brazilian style with Banda Black Rio a jazz-funk outfit from well...Rio.

A few good options to choose from on Spotify and I think you'll get a groove out of Saci Perere their 1980 album. They sound like a cooler Kool and the Gang on the second track Miss Cheryl. Get down and get groovy.

World Cup Album-A-Day 010 - Rodrigo Amarante

We are at day 10 of the world cup and it's surprising how fast 10 days can go.
Props to Costa Rica and France for great performances.
Going to head in a different direction today.

You may know of the band Little Joy with it's Strokes connections, well one third of the band is Rodrigo Amarante from Brazil. His first solo record away from Little Joy and his previous band Los Hermanos came out a couple years ago and it takes off where Little Joy started and goes further bringing a beautiful Brazilian edge to the singer/songwriter rock vibe.

p.s. if you want off this list please just email un-subscribe. If you want to share with another friend please do and you can forward me their address to get added to the daily list!

World Cup Album-A-Day 009 [Black Orpheus]

Welcome to day 9 of the world cup.
I've just about got over the horrible result from yesterday so let's press on!
The are so many ways to delve into Brazil's rich music history and we'll get to Elis Regina, Jorge Ben, and others soon enough. Today I decided to get into the Brazilian rhythms through the fantastic soundtrack to the film Black Orpheus which was a Palm D'Or and Oscar winner in 1959 and 1960.
The music is comes from Antonio Carlos Jobim, Luiz Bonfa and others bringing you the soul and beauty of the fevela. Enjoy!

WorldCup Brazil Album-A-Day 008

Hello and welcome to Day 8 of the world cup.
Big games today obviously but enough of that straight onto music.
Caetano Veloso is a well known figure and you probably remember his memorable performance from Almodovar's 2002 film Talk to Her (aka Hable con ella). Or you might be a fan of his Nirvana cover. More about him right here. I was a little limited by what Spotify had available but luckily they did have one of my fav records the self titled 1986 record (he had many self titled albums actually), which among many great laid back tracks includes a great Michael Jackson "Billie Jean" cover.

See what he's up to and pick up some of his music here

World Cup Brazil Album-A-Day 007 Seu Jorge

I've been sharing a project with some friends and been encouraged to share further so here it is!
Brazil is home to such fantastic music and this world cup is a great opportunity to celebrate the country's great musical tradition.
I'm going to try and continue to share one album a day until the final match of the world cup.
Today is from Seu Jorge who you may know as an actor from Wes Anderson's Life Aquatic or the classic Brazilian film City of God. I'm sharing with you his first album from 2001 "Carolina" (re-released here in 2014). Beautiful modern sounding Brazil.

Find out more about him here.
