Time for some jazz! This week saw the end of an era with Gilles Peterson's stint on BBC Radio 1 coming to an end. So much of what I know about music started in one way or another through listening to GP's shows. I've followed him from Jazz FM to Kiss FM to BBC Radio 1 and now it's going to be BBC 6 Music. Different stations, same great music. There are a bunch of tracks in this week's mix that are inspired by my days listening to GP starting out with this UK classic Pnu Riff with Comfy Club. Enjoy.

Hey folks something different this week. I was in Hong Kong a week ago doing a gig for the launch of H&M's Marni line. It was a four hour set and here's a two hour section from the first session. It covers a lot of ground in the jazz dance, downtempo, lounge side of things with some house-y funk/soul re-edits thrown in for good measure. I'll probably drop another session from the second set of the event in a few weeks. It was a lot of fun doing this and I hope you enjoy.

Apecial selection this week. I teamed up with fellow MixClouder and UK Jazz Radio presenter to drop a sound clash session. We had a lot of fun putting this together and hope it hits the spot for you guys. I'm going to kick it off with five tracks to get you in the mood starting with a great Portishead remix of Paul Weller that I missed. Then it's twelve tracks going back to back from the two of us from Sahib Shihab to Sun Ra and beyond. Show us the love if you dig and we'll put the touches on the next session.

I spent the weekend digitizing a bunch of new records I've been picking up over the last month on my travels around the usual LA stores. A lovely Max Roach find I've been hoping to come across plus more music from Ahmed Jamal an artist that I'm getting more and more into. A cool version of Little Sunflower comes from Jerke Kluge's Deep Jazz combo that I heard on the latest Hedonist sessions plus a new collaboration from MixCloud's always point duo UniverSouLove and the Hedonist. A fantastic version of Marvin Gaye from Pharaoh Sanders that I'd never heard before and was kinda taken aback when I was digitizing the album I picked up as it's right at the end.

Starting off this week's show with a bunch of records I picked up while in Copenhagen earlier this week. I found a pretty healthy record store scene over there. I was a little surprised to be honest. Check out Street Sounds if you are over there ever. It's pretty much all jazz all the way except for one Seu Jorge track at the end. I have a couple of tracks with the unmistakable voice of Andy Bey, one with Horace Silver and one with his sisters. Ahmad Jamal does a beautiful live version of 'Round Midnight recorded at the Montreal Jazz Festival in '85. A track from Sun Ra plus a japanese cover of a Sun Ra track from Yann Tomita. I've also dropped right at the end a quite nutty Soil & Pimp Sessions track from their new record. You're probably used to crazy jazz from those guys but this is goes another level, hopefully I won't scare away too many of you :) Enjoy and it's going to be all jazz all the time until mid December when I wrap up the year with the usual Rewind selection.

This week started with the great latin band Ocho and then it just went all Brazil for 30 mins, it just seemed to make sense. From Bossa Nova, to Brazilian jazz flavors and funk all the way to french bossa, it's all there. After the quick Brazil detour it is back to business as usual. I got sent a great rework by Italy's Suonho who takes an inspired pass at Donny Hathaway's classic The Ghetto, check Suonho out on SoundCloud, lots of great music. There's also a new track from Suen Kuti, Benny Sings, and a great new project from AM & Shawn Lee. Interesting freestyle episode this week. Somehow went from Amy Winehouse to classic 90s Acid Jazz hiphop before going via Herb Alpert's jazz-funk classic to NYC's Balihu label and a track from Daniel Wang. There's usual spiritual jazz interlude before getting a little darker. I hope you like the great Arcade Fire cover from Mr. Little Jean and also the Caribu remix of Radiohead, one of a bunch of electronic/dupstep takes of their last album. It's. Been. A. Long. Time.
It's been over six weeks since the last podcast and that's the longest I've gone without dropping a mix. There's been work, there's been a holiday and there's been another edition of Get Closer in LA. But there hasn't been a new mix until now! Hopefully you all still remember what PJL is all about. I just started this weekend to go through a backlog of music from the last six weeks and I'm not even close to getting through everything. It's a very mixed bag of music. A great 74 Miles Away track off the new Laid Back compilation. Some old Roberto Fonseca, Matthew Halsall and Ramsey Lewis bring the jazz with a twist. Two back to back tracks from Ashley Beedle and then something off a new Mayer Hawthorne cover EP. Finally six tracks from the greatly missed Gil Scott-Hero who passed away at the end of last week suddenly. These are just the tip of the iceberg of his fantastic legacy. Enjoy and until next week.
